From little band that could to Big Four favorites, all on the strength of one monumental hit, Fun. dominated the proceedings on Wednesday night's (December 5) "Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!" (emphasis theirs), racking up four nominations during the telecast and an additional two when the complete list of nods was revealed soon after.
In fact, Fun.'s six nominations have them tied with a handful of other acts — Frank Ocean, Mumford & Sons, Kanye West and Jay-Z — for the most heading into the 55th annual Grammy Awards, which will air February 10 from Los Angeles.
Fun. are the only act nominated in each of the so-called Big Four categories, picking up Record and Song of the year nods for "We Are Young," an Album of the Year nom for Some Nights and a slot in the Best New Artist category, where they'll face off against Ocean. His Channel Orange is up for Album of the Year, and "Thinkin Bout You" picked up a Record of the Year nomination.
Jay and Kanye's six nominations were each spread between accolades for their Watch the Throne collaboration and their respective works, as Hov picked up a pair of nods for his features (on "I Do" and "Talk That Talk"), and 'Ye earned a nom for G.O.O.D. Music's "Mercy." Mumford & Sons' six were also spread across several categories, including Album of the Year for Babel.
The Black Keys will head into the Grammys with five nods, including Album of the Year for El Camino and Record of the Year for "Lonely Boy." Frontman Dan Auerbach is up for Producer of the Year (Non Classical), meaning he could take home six total awards. R&B upstart Miguel also shocked many with five nominations, including Song of the Year for "Adorn."
In the lead-up to the Grammy nominations, most experts said there were no clear-cut favorites, and that analysis proved to be pretty accurate. After all, there is no one most-nominated artist, and, for the first time in Grammy history, voters selected six songs for Record of the Year.
For further proof of the parity, one need look no further than the race for Song of the Year, which features the aforementioned "We Are Young" and "Adorn," but also Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You"), Ed Sheeran's "The A Team" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe."
Album of the Year is a little less muddy, though Jack White's Blunderbuss did manage to crash the party by picking up a nomination. Best New Artist is highlighted by Fun. and Ocean, but the Lumineers and Hunter Hayes are also in the running, as are Alabama Shakes, who knocked off presumed front-runners like Jepsen and Gotye to get the fifth nom.
All in all, it's anybody's guess who will walk away with the most hardware at the Grammys, but it's safe to say we won't see a repeat of last year's show, when Adele dominated, winning six Golden Gramophones, including Record, Album and Song of the Year. Maybe that was intentional, maybe not, but one thing seems clear: This year, not even the voters could make up their minds, which, at the very least, is sure to make for an entertaining — if not slightly confusing — night.
