Not even Halloween was immune to Sandy's wrath. As millions of people are still assessing the damage left to their homes and communities after Hurricane Sandy swept through the Northeast, many Halloween festivities are being canceled or pushed until a later date, including Heidi Klum's annual star-studded New York bash.

Klum, whose party last year drew celebrity guests such as Fergie and Amber Rose, has been planning the gathering for weeks, but was forced to postpone due to Sandy's aftermath. On Tuesday, Klum tweeted a photo of herself standing in a vacant New York City street to update her partygoers.

"Hope you & your loved ones are safe after the storm," tweeted Klum, who was expecting to dress up as Cleopatra this Halloween. "Canceling my Halloween party ... postponing to a haunted Christmas."

In New York City, where large parts of lower Manhattan are still without power and mass transportation, the annual Village Halloween Parade has been canceled for the first time in its four-decade history.

"Unfortunately, we just cannot spare the manpower from the NYPD and other city agencies to host the annual Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, so we are postponing it to a later date sometime next week," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "We'll work tomorrow and figure out what date makes sense given the resources the city has."

The parade usually draws a crowd, decked out in elaborate Halloween costumes, of 50,000 to 60,000 residents and tourists who march through the lower part of Manhattan. This year's parade theme was "Tick Tock" and the final year of the Mayan calendar, with "visions apocalyptic."
