With over 8 million people stuck without power along on the East Coast, it should come as little surprise that most movie theaters in New York, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Washington DC are currently dark. According to THR, the lack of open theaters could cause box office returns to dip over the next week.
As noted by the trade magazine, ticket sales reached only $6 million on Monday, down almost 40 percent from the same Monday one year ago. While a lack of big films could be blamed for the decrease, it's also likely that the damage left behind by Hurricane Sandy significantly affected attendance.
This is poised to be a big weekend at the box office, with both "Wreck-It Ralph" and "Flight" opening nationwide. The former film, an animated adventure, was projected to open north of $50 million; "Flight," an R-rated drama, was likely to earn $20 million or more.
According to officials in New York, it could be days before power is restored to Manhattan. On Long Island, it could be 10 days before power is turned back on.
