VMA performer offers up her sage wisdom for the post-breakup blues during 'MTV First.' By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Taylor Swift's quirky, one-take video for her chart-topping single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," is all about her on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again relationship with her love interest, played by model/actor Noah Mills.
Swift premiered the clip Thursday night during "MTV First: Taylor Swift," one week before she'll take the stage at the 2012 Video Music Awards to debut a single off her upcoming Red album. During the three-minute-plus clip, the singer and her beau have their ups and downs before she ultimately decides that they are, well, never ever (ever) getting back together. When she sat down with MTV News' Sway Calloway to open up about the video, she also offered up some breakup advice for her fans.
So, Taylor, how long is too long to get over your ex?
"I think it's double the amount of time you were with them," she said. "For me, just take the amount of time you were with them and times it by two, or seven."
However, Swift had definitely had enough when she finally did break it off with the unnamed ex who inspired the lead single off Red.
"Well I wrote this song with Max Martin and Shellback, which didn't hurt at all," she said. "This actually happened. When we were in the middle of writing a different song and this guy walked into this studio randomly and he's like, 'I'm friends with your ex-boyfriend. I heard you guys are getting back together.' But as soon as he left, I just started going on this rant. So Max said, 'You seem really passionate about it. You should write a song about it.' We just created this song in like 30 minutes. It came from a very real place and it came from a very spontaneous situation."
There might be some more spontaneous situations in Swift's future. Ahead of her album release, she is set to take the stage at the 2012 MTV Music Video Awards on September 6 where she will perform the song live for the first time. The show, hosted by Kevin Hart, goes live at 8 p.m. ET/PT from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
