To celebrate its 100th episode, "The Mentalist" turned back the clock and treated fans to an episode-length flashback to when Patrick Jane first met Detective Teresa Lisbon. It happened when he simply wandered into the police station, fresh from his stint in a mental hospital.
As TV Fanatic noted, "This was not the charismatic, confident Patrick Jane we know now. This was a man who was just released from a mental hospital."
But while Lisbon and her cohorts did what they could to get him to leave, Jane simply wouldn't. Did he purposely provoke Det. Hannigan into hitting him, or was he just doing his observational thing and happened to hit a nerve? The assault certainly changed the tune of the office. Suddenly, they agreed to let him look at the Red John files, and sent him with Lisbon on a ride-along so she could answer any questions he might have.
Instead, even a somewhat dazed and raw Patrick Jane did his thing and managed to impress Lisbon, proving instrumental in solving the case she was working on. She took a huge risk pulling him in to try and find the guilty party in a room full of suspects, but Jane worked a magic trick -- literally -- and the gamble paid off.
And so it begins, and so "The Mentalist" continues on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
